Burhan camp is located in a crucial bit of the Khata Wildlife Corridor and is run by a team of passionate conservationists in a micro-conservancy style. Set up with a founding principle of ‘leaving no footprint’, they rely minimally on the structures on the land itself. The camps are set up only when we have guests coming in and it remains a wild playground on other occasions. It hosts some prime wildlife species including Greater One-Horned Rhinos, Bengal Tigers, Asian wild Elephants, and many birds such as Black Ibis, Ruddy Shelduck, Nightjars, Fishing Owls, etc. Wilderness lovers can make the best of their time while contributing to the sustained protection of this critical land for the wildlife and local communities and that is the main motto.

‘Burhan’ – Our story

Tharus were the rulers of Inner Terai in places like Dang. Later tricked into slavery, they spent a dreadful episode of suffering and bondage. Those who could dare to break the daily routine of slavery and bondage made escapes to this newfound wild land that they called ‘Buhraan’. Later the trend of leaving your baggage behind and freeing yourself from whether it was slavery, debt, family feud, or society in general became known as ‘Buhraan Jaane’. Things were basic in Burhaan, there were challenges and threats and yet the sense of freedom and the feeling of breaking the bondage was sweet and rewarding. The rivers, the tall standing trees, the golden sunsets on the far-stretched horizons, the floodplains, the teeming wildlife, the fresh air, and the unspoiled rich soil all aided the ‘Burhaan State of Mind’. This was the beginning of a new civilization created out of scratch of what was in the memory of a few escapists of what their culture was. Everything needed to begin from the basic elements, mud, wood, stones, bones, and shells.

Bardia still maintains a very in-tune-with-nature local lifestyle. One of the most hardworking ones among the ethnic groups of Nepal- The Tharu people and their culture have set an amazing pace to daily life in this unventured landscape. We want people to break out of their daily routines and connect with nature in Burhan.
